You just need to melt up the soap base, add essential oil or any other add-ins into it – pour it into a mold and allow the soap to get hardened. Soap is ready to use within a few hours. You don’t need to handle the lye process in this method.
- Hot Process:
Hot process method involves making soap from the beginning. This leads to the handling of lye. In hot process Soap Making, the application of external heat speeds up the saponification process. This allows the soap to be used even the next day but it is ideal to use it after 1 week to get a harder one. The soap made through this process has a rustic look and homemade appearance.
- Cold Process:
Cold process method also involves making soap from the beginning. This leads to the handling of lye. It is one of the popular processes as it allows a great degree of customization. It is a different process as it uses internal heat that’s naturally produced during saponification. This is one of the longest methods of soap making as it requires the soap to cure for 4-6 weeks. The soap made through this process is more refined.
What is Lye?
In scientific terms, soap is a mixture of oil and alkali. The oil which is being used is a type of Essential Oil and alkali is a chemical called lye. The heated mixture of oil and lye results in soap. This happening of a chemical reaction is known as saponification.
